Biography
Dr Su Xinyi is Executive Director of the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB) at the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), a position she has held since March 2024. She also serves as Senior Consultant Vitreo-Retinal Surgeon at the National University Hospital (NUH) and Associate Professor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. She holds multiple joint appointments including Research Director at the Department of Ophthalmology (NUS), Co-Director of the Centre for Innovation and Precision Eye Health (NUS), and Clinician-Scientist at the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI).
A recipient of the prestigious National Science Scholarship from A*STAR, Dr Su graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2009 with both an MBChir degree in Clinical Medicine and a PhD in Molecular Biology, supervised by Ashok Venkitaraman at the Hutchinson MRC Cancer Cell Unit. In 2021, she received the Junior Chamber International Ten Outstanding Young People Gold Award (TOYP) for Medical Innovation. Her research focuses on harnessing biomaterial, regenerative stem cell, and nucleic acid technologies for treating age-related retinal degenerative diseases, and she leads the Translational Retinal Research Laboratory at IMCB.
As a passionate advocate for bridging science and medicine, Dr Su has been awarded over SGD25 million in competitive research funding and has published extensively in high-impact journals including Nature Biomedical Engineering, Nature Communications, PNAS, and Lancet Global Health. She holds several patents and co-founded Vitreogel Innovations Pte Ltd to commercialize her research on next-generation vitreous substitutes for retinal detachment surgery. She also serves as a scientific advisor to EyeStem and is an Executive Committee Member of the Stem Cell Society, Singapore.
