Biography

Associate Professor Christine Cheung is a vascular biomedical scientist and the Provost’s Chair in Medicine at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Trained as a biomedical engineer at Imperial College London (First Class Honours BEng) and a stem cell researcher at the University of Cambridge (PhD in Cardiovascular and Stem Cell Medicine), she pioneered methods to convert human stem cells into blood vessel cells resembling those found in the brain and heart — with transformative implications for understanding and treating vascular diseases. She also serves as Assistant Dean (PhD Studies and Professional Development) at LKCMedicine.

Achievements

  • JCI Singapore TOYP 2018 Honoree – Medical Innovation — the only woman honoured at the 2018 ceremony, recognising her groundbreaking work converting stem cells into vascular cells to model diseases of the brain and heart.
  • JCI Singapore TOYP 2024 Honoree – Medical Innovation — selected again as one of 9 Singaporeans to represent Singapore at the JCI TOYP World Awards, recognising her sustained impact in vascular biomedicine.
  • World Economic Forum Young Scientists Community, Class of 2019 — one of a select global cohort of under-40 scientists chosen for their extraordinary contributions to science and society.
  • L’Oréal-UNESCO Singapore For Women in Science National Fellowship (2018) — awarded for outstanding scientific achievement by women researchers in Singapore.
  • Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) Young Investigator Grant — one of the most prestigious and competitive international grants in life sciences research.
  • Nanyang Research Award (Young Investigator), NTU (2022) — recognising outstanding contributions to frontiers of knowledge by researchers under age 39.
  • Paul Dudley White International Scholar Award, American Heart Association (2023) — awarded to the research team with the highest-ranked abstract at the Basic Cardiovascular Science Scientific Sessions.
  • Young Investigator Prize, British Society for Cardiovascular Research — awarded for pioneering creation of origin-specific vascular smooth muscle cells.
  • Executive Committee Member, Stem Cell Society Singapore (since 2018) and active contributor to Singapore’s broader research ecosystem.
