Biography

Paul Tan is an internationally recognized Singapore lawyer specializing in international arbitration and commercial litigation. He was called to the Bar in Singapore in 2007 and to Middle Temple in 2012. Throughout his career, he has held leadership positions at major international law firms, including partner roles at Rajah & Tann, Cavenagh Law, and Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, where he headed the Asian arbitration practice. In 2016, he was honored as a TOYP Singapore recipient for Political, Legal, and/or Governmental Affairs, recognizing his contributions to Singapore's legal sector.

Tan has extensive experience in managing high-value disputes across Asia, regularly representing multinational corporations, global insurers, financial institutions, and Asian governments. He sits as an arbitrator in cases before major international arbitration centers including SIAC, HKIAC, and ICC. His expertise spans complex issues of public and private international law across industries including telecoms, natural resources, technology and media, construction and real estate, and corporate governance. In 2016, he was named Disputes Star of the Year by Asialaw, besting two senior counsels and other international practitioners.

Beyond his legal practice, Tan is actively involved in professional development and legal education. He serves as the elected Treasurer of the Law Society of Singapore and has co-authored several authoritative books on international arbitration including A Commentary on the Singapore International Arbitration Act and The Law and Theory of International Commercial Arbitration in Singapore. He is also committed to mentoring young lawyers and established the Young Lawyers' Task Force to improve training and support for emerging legal talent in Singapore.
