Biography

Lisa F.P. Ng is a Singaporean viral immunologist who has made significant contributions to infectious disease research and public health preparedness. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Biochemistry from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology in 1995, and earned her PhD in Molecular Virology from the National University of Singapore in 2002. After joining the Genome Institute of Singapore as a postdoctoral fellow in 2002, she contributed to developing frameworks for broad-range capability for preparedness against viral diseases including influenza, SARS, hepatitis, and vector-borne diseases.

Currently serving as Executive Director of A*STAR Infectious Diseases Labs and the Biomedical Research Council, Lisa leads research focused on the immune responses of arthrogenic arboviruses that are epidemic or highly endemic in tropical regions, with particular emphasis on chikungunya virus, dengue virus, and Zika virus. Her team has published in top-tier scientific journals and made key findings to advance human immunology research in controlling viral infections. She also holds adjunct professorships at the National University of Singapore, Duke-NUS Medical School, and serves as Professor and Chair of Viral Immunology at the University of Liverpool's Institute of Infection and Global Health.

Lisa received the Junior Chamber International Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World Singapore 2013 Scientific and/or Technological Development Award for her groundbreaking work in infectious disease research. Her other notable achievements include being named Most Inspiring Woman at the Great Women of Our Time Awards for Science and Technology in 2005, receiving the prestigious ASEAN International Young Scientist and Technologist Award in 2008, and earning A*STAR's Most Inspiring Mentor Award in 2013. She has been recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate and named one of the Top 2% Scientists Worldwide by Stanford University.

Achievements

  • Developed diagnostic kits for detecting Avian Influenza H5N1 and SARS, contributing to disease preparedness frameworks.
  • First Singaporean and first woman to win the ASEAN Young Scientist and Technologist Award in 2008.
  • Led groundbreaking research on chikungunya virus immunity that enabled doctors to identify early infection signs and contain outbreaks effectively.
  • Named A*STAR's Most Inspiring Mentor Award in 2013 for outstanding mentorship of graduate students and scientists.
