Biography

Kim Whye Kee, born in 1979, is a Singapore potter and ceramic artist whose life story embodies transformation and redemption. A former gang leader and drug addict, he spent a decade in prison, discovering his passion for pottery during the final months of his incarceration in 2007. When given special permission to attend his father's funeral while serving time, he was determined to turn his life around and rekindled his interest in art, specifically pottery.

With support from generous sponsors who recognized his talent, Kim graduated with BA Honours in Fine Arts from LASALLE College of the Arts in 2013. He subsequently apprenticed under master potter Chua Soo Khim at Sam Mui Kuang Pottery in 2015 to refine his skills. In 2016, he established Qi Pottery, focusing on crafting exquisite teaware. That same year, he was recognized as a TOYP Singapore Honoree for Personal Improvement and/or Accomplishment, acknowledging his remarkable personal transformation.

Beyond his artistic pursuits, Kim is dedicated to giving back to the community. He co-founded Beacon of Life (BoL) and Beacon of Life Academy (BoLA), initiatives working with ex-convicts and at-risk youths respectively. His work philosophy centers on 'regret, reconstruct, reimburse,' reflecting his journey from adversity to success. He continues to create functional teaware shaped by personal transformation and deep dialogue with tea culture, developing a loyal following for his expressive yet highly functional pieces.
