Biography

Jovin Tan is a renowned Singaporean Paralympic athlete who was born with cerebral palsy on August 21, 1986. His journey into sports began at age 15 when he was referred to the Singapore Disability Sports Council by the Asian Women's Welfare Association after spending most of his time at home due to his limited mobility below the neck. He started sailing in 2001 initially as an escape from family difficulties, particularly with his father who struggled to accept his disability.

Tan became one of the first Singaporean sailors to participate in the Paralympic Games and competed in four consecutive Paralympics from Athens 2004 to Rio 2016, achieving progressively better results with an eighth-place finish in Beijing 2008 and seventh place in London 2012. He also won gold medals at the 2014 Asian Para Games and 2015 ASEAN Para Games in Singapore. After retiring from competitive sailing, he became the first certified sailing coach with a disability in Singapore, obtaining all required certifications including a power boat license.

In 2018, Tan was honored as a TOYP Singapore Honoree for Personal Improvement and/or Accomplishment, and was selected to represent Singapore at the global TOYP World Awards. He has since transitioned to boccia in 2022 after sailing was dropped from the Paralympics, recently winning gold at the 2025 Canberra World Boccia Challenger. Throughout his career, he has been dedicated to coaching and mentoring other athletes with disabilities through the Learn to Sail Programme.
