Biography

Jason Chee Weng Fai is a Singaporean Navy regular serviceman and para table tennis player born on January 26, 1983. He studied at Westlake Primary School, Guangyang Secondary School, and Ngee Ann Polytechnic before enlisting in the Republic of Singapore Navy as a regular serviceman, where he progressed to the rank of Military Expert 2 and served as a weapons systems supervisor aboard the RSS Endeavour at Changi Naval Base.

On December 10, 2012, while conducting routine equipment checks on the RSS Endeavour, Chee suffered a devastating accident when he was caught between a motorized winch and a berthing rope, resulting in the loss of both his legs, his left arm, and three fingers on his right hand. After extensive hospitalization and rehabilitation lasting until June 2013, he demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination to rebuild his life.

In 2014, Chee was recognized as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons by JCI Singapore for Personal Improvement and Accomplishment, acknowledging his inspirational recovery and achievements. He returned to work in the Singapore Navy in June 2014 as an operations supervisor and pursued a mathematics degree at Singapore University of Social Sciences to honor his late mother's wishes. His journey from a life-altering accident to becoming a champion para table tennis player and inspiring figure exemplifies extraordinary personal accomplishment and determination.

Achievements

  • Received JCI Ten Outstanding Young Persons Singapore Merit Award in 2014 for Personal Improvement and/or Accomplishment.
  • Won multiple medals at ASEAN Para Games including gold in team para table tennis in 2015 and individual gold in 2017.
  • Successfully returned to active duty in Singapore Navy 18 months after losing both legs and left arm in 2012 accident.
  • Received Straits Times Athlete of the Year award in 2017 for resilience and achievements in para table tennis.
  • Transitioned from left-handed to right-handed para table tennis playing and represented Singapore nationally within months of taking up the sport.
