Biography

Dr. Azariah Tan is a distinguished Singaporean classical pianist and pedagogue who has inspired audiences worldwide despite facing significant physical challenges. Diagnosed with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss at the age of four and having lost 85% of his hearing, Azariah's journey to becoming a celebrated musician is a testament to his resilience, passion, and exceptional talent. In 2014, he was named an Honoree at the Ten Outstanding Young People (TOYP) Singapore for Personal Improvement and Accomplishment, recognizing his inspirational achievements in the arts.

Azariah holds a Doctorate in Piano Performance and a double Masters in Music degree in Piano Performance and Chamber Music from the University of Michigan, where he studied under Logan Skelton. He previously completed his undergraduate studies with first-class honors at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, National University of Singapore, studying with Associate Professor Albert Tiu. As an educator, he conducts lecture-recitals at local and international conferences and has taught on the piano faculty of the Bluelake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan, at the University of Michigan, and regularly holds masterclasses at institutions including The School of the Arts Singapore.

Beyond his educational work, Azariah is an accomplished performer who has won first prizes at several national and international piano competitions, including The American Prize, the National Piano and Violin Competition of Singapore, and the WPTA International Piano Competition. He has performed at prestigious venues such as the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall in the USA, and internationally in Europe, Japan, and South-East Asia. Azariah currently serves as a staff piano accompanist at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory and on the board of ART:DIS Singapore, demonstrating his commitment to using his talent to give back to the community through inspirational talks and fundraising concerts.

  • First Singaporean to record an all-Chopin classical album, earning critical acclaim in the classical music community.
  • Won first prizes at multiple international competitions including The American Prize, the Bradshaw and Bruno International Piano Competition, and the National Piano and Violin Competition of Singapore.
  • Performed at prestigious venues including Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, and with orchestras such as the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and Polish Silesian Philharmonic.
  • Recipient of the VSArts International Young Soloists Award in Washington DC and the NUS Outstanding Young Alumni Award.
