Biography

Lee Hsien Loong (born 10 February 1952) is Singapore’s third Prime Minister, having served from August 2004 to May 2024, and currently serves as Senior Minister in the cabinet of PM Lawrence Wong. The eldest son of Singapore’s founding father Lee Kuan Yew, he distinguished himself academically — graduating with a First Class Honours BA in Mathematics and a Diploma in Computer Science (with Distinction) from Trinity College, Cambridge, and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard Kennedy School. He also served as a Brigadier-General in the Singapore Armed Forces before entering politics in 1984.

Achievements

  • 3rd Prime Minister of Singapore (2004–2024) — served for 20 years, the second-longest tenure as PM after Lee Kuan Yew; stepped down at age 72 handing over to Lawrence Wong.
  • Secretary-General, People’s Action Party (2004–2024) — led Singapore’s ruling party for two decades.
  • Deputy Prime Minister (1990–2004), Minister for Finance, Minister for Trade and Industry, Second Minister for Defence, and Chairman, Monetary Authority of Singapore (1998–2004).
  • Chair, GIC (Government of Singapore Investment Corporation) and Chair, Research, Innovation and Enterprise Council — overseeing Singapore’s sovereign wealth and national R&D strategy.
  • Singapore’s GDP more than doubled from S$228 billion (2004) to S$532 billion (2024); GDP per capita rose from US$27,600 to US$84,700.
  • Median gross monthly income of Singapore residents climbed from S$2,326 to S$5,197; Gini coefficient (after transfers) dropped from 0.42 to 0.37, reflecting reduced inequality.
  • Successfully led Singapore through the Global Financial Crisis (2008–2009), COVID-19 pandemic (2020–2023), and associated economic recoveries.
  • Grew Singapore’s free trade agreements from 5 (2004) to 27; annual airport passenger arrivals more than doubled from 14.3 million to 29.5 million.
  • Repealed Section 377A (decriminalising male homosexual activity); led landmark social policy reforms including MediShield Life, Workfare, and ComCare.
  • Singapore was the only Southeast Asian country to sanction Russia following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, reflecting principled commitment to international law.
  • Conferred the Darjah Utama Temasek (First Class) and the Seri Paduka Mahkota Johor (First Class) among other national and foreign honours.
  • Established the Lee Hsien Loong Award for Outstanding All-Round Achievement and Lee Hsien Loong Award for Special Achievement (2009) — education endowment awards for post-secondary students across JCs, ITE, Polytechnics and Universities, personally funded from his salary increases.
