Understanding TOYP 2026: The Foundation

The Ten Outstanding Young Persons (TOYP) award honors young and bright innovators across every industry. This isn't just another award – it's Singapore's gateway to national recognition and international leadership development.

Why TOYP Matters

The Award serves as a platform for winners to contribute to society on an ever greater level, as well as an example and incentive for youth of Singapore to channel their energies in the right direction and create a positive change in the community. Winners represent Singapore at the JCI World Congress and join an elite network of global changemakers.

The Five Judging Criteria: What Wins

Judges evaluate every application using these weighted criteria:

C1: Impact & Outcomes (30% weight)

What it means: Measurable change you've created in your field or community

What judges want to see:

  • Specific numbers with third-party verification
  • Clear before/after comparisons
  • Evidence of lasting change
  • Beneficiary testimonials

Red flag: Self-reported figures without corroboration score one band lower

C2: Leadership & Initiative (25% weight)

What it means: Your role in driving change, regardless of your job title

What judges want to see:

  • Evidence you initiated something new
  • Examples of overcoming significant obstacles
  • Proof of team building and inspiration
  • Demonstration of decision-making under pressure

Remember: Leading from the front matters more than your position on the org chart

C3: Innovation & Originality (20% weight)

What it means: Novel approaches or creative solutions to existing problems

What judges want to see:

  • Something that didn't exist before you created it
  • Adaptation of existing solutions to Singapore's unique context
  • Evidence others have adopted your approach
  • Clear differentiation from existing solutions

C4: Sustainability & Legacy (15% weight)

What it means: Your work continues without you and has lasting impact

What judges want to see:

  • Systems operating independently for 1+ years
  • Named successors or institutional structures
  • Evidence of durability under pressure
  • Plans for long-term continuation

Critical note: Future intentions don't score – only current, operating legacy counts

C5: Inspiration & Role Modelling (10% weight)

What it means: How you've influenced others to take action

What judges want to see:

  • Named individuals who changed their behaviour because of you
  • Speaking engagements, mentoring relationships
  • Media coverage showcasing your influence
  • Awards or recognition from peers

Remember: Social media following doesn't equal inspiration – judges look for proven influence

Step-by-Step Application Process

Before You Start: Evidence Gathering

Successful applications are built on solid evidence. Gather these before you begin:

For Impact (C1):

  • Third-party verification letters from organisations you've worked with

  • Records of decisions made under your leadership

  • Patents, publications, or intellectual property
  • Evidence of others adopting your methods
  • Comparative analysis showing your novelty
  • Awards or recognition for innovation

For Legacy (C4):

  • Organisational charts showing successor structures
  • Financial records proving independent operation
  • Timeline showing continuous operation without your direct involvement
  • Strategic plans with implementation evidence

Common Application Mistakes to Avoid

The Big Five Errors

  1. Assertion Without Evidence: Claiming "I helped thousands" without verification
  2. Confusing Teamwork with Leadership: Being part of success vs. driving it
  3. Future Plans Over Current Results: Describing intentions instead of achievements
  4. Wrong Category Selection: Forcing your story into an unsuitable category
  5. Missing Professional Photo: Automatic grounds for rejection

Writing That Wins vs. Writing That Fails

Weak: "I've been involved in various community projects and helped many people."

Strong: "I founded Singapore Youth Mentorship Network in 2023, which has connected 247 at-risk teenagers with professional mentors. Third-party evaluation by NUS Social Work Department shows 89% of participants reported improved academic performance and 76% secured part-time employment."

The Selection Process: What Happens Next

Phase 1: Initial Screening

The first phase is a screening process where all eligible nominations that JCI Headquarters receives are submitted to a panel of distinguished judges. Their entries are narrowed down based on the criterion set forth by JCI then submitted to a second judging panel, which select 10 honorees.

Phase 2: Final Judging

The Judges of the JCI TOYP typically include business and community leaders, university professors, and members of the JCI Board of Directors. The judging is done in two phases.

The Blind Review Policy

Judges cannot and do not consider:

  • Your employer's name or reputation
  • Your job title or position
  • Your social media following
  • Your personal connections
  • Your university ranking

They score purely on evidence of impact, leadership, innovation, legacy, and inspiration.
